Where We Fit In

Khuthaza is a non-profit social enterprise operating in the greater housing and construction sectors.

Non-profit:

Non-profit Organisations (NPO) such as Khuthaza are companies established for a social purpose. Our income and property are not distributable to members or office bearers, except as reasonable compensation for services rendered. Any profit earned is channelled back into the organisation.

Internationally, civil society organisations are fast becoming key players in the socio-economic arena. The role of the NPO is expanding to encompass a wide spectrum of social issues. NPOs generally play an important role in effecting social transformation.

Social enterprise:

Social enterprises drive social innovation and transformation in various fields including education, health, environment and enterprise development. They pursue poverty alleviation goals with entrepreneurial zeal, business methods and the courage to innovate and overcome traditional practices. A social entrepreneur, similar to a business entrepreneur, builds strong and sustainable organizations. (The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship)

Government and the Industry:

The South African construction sector is considered a national asset. Government has shown remarkable commitment to the growth, development and transformation of the industry.

Government spend on housing and infrastructure is a key factor driving the sector’s strength and resilience. The industry has been performing very well in recent years. This boom has created numerous opportunities for South Africans to enter the industry and to develop successful businesses and careers.

The boom has created a significant demand for skilled individuals and businesses. This demand for skills creates a fantastic environment for change, transformation in terms of race and gender, and accelerated growth.

Many industry role-players recognise and are approaching transformation as a business imperative. They have demonstrated their commitment through the development of the Construction Charter and draft Construction Code of Good Practice and will undoubtedly see the fruits of their investments for years to come.

Over the past several years, women have been exploring all areas of the economy, construction being no exception. For a number of reasons, women are taking a keen interest in the industry and aim to play a leading role at all levels of the sector.

Khuthaza’s Role:

Khuthaza participates directly in the development process and helps table and define issues of social and economic relevance.

The organisation, through advocacy and capacity building, is increasingly contributing to transformation and growth in the sector.

Khuthaza endeavours to play a key role in acting as a bridge between women and the construction industry expanding the talent pipeline through an infusion of appropriately skilled individuals and businesses.

Through Contractor Development, Talent Development and Bridgebuilding we aim to add value to our key stakeholders – both women and the industry.
